APNA Nurse Awards 2019 - Nominations now open!

Nominations for APNA's 2019 Nurse Awards are now open!

There are two award categories open for nomination which include: 

  • APNA Recently Graduated Nurse of the Year 
  • APNA Nurse of the Year. 

Who can nominate?

Anyone can nominate a nurse for the APNA Nurse Awards. This may include a manager, co-worker, patient, friend, etc.

Self-nominations will be accepted.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for these awards nominees must: 

  • Have consented to be nominated
  • Be a registered nurse, enrolled nurse, midwife or a nurse practitioner currently registered with AHPRA
  • Be working as a nurse in a primary health care setting*
  • Be a current member of APNA (NB: current APNA Board members are ineligible for these awards)
  • Be available and committed to be an APNA ambassador through the year of the recipient's award. This may include some interstate travel funded by APNA
  • Be available to attend the APNA National Conference on Friday 5th April 2019 to receive the award
  • Be willing to share your story with the APNA community.

*Primary health care settings are workplaces outside of the acute setting, including areas such as but not limited to aged care, community health, correctional health and general practice.

Winners will:

  • Become an APNA ambassador for 2019–20 with the opportunity to attend key meetings and events
  • Receive a free registration to the APNA National Conference (4-6 April 2019), plus flights and accommodation
  • An experienced nurse will mentor the winner of the APNA Recently Graduated Nurse of the Year for 12 months.

How to apply?

  • Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and determine which of the two awards are available to you.
  • Review the selection criteria stated below for the relevant award.
  • Complete the online application form below and ensure you address each of the selection criteria statements relevant to the award category. This is an important part of your application as awards will be assessed according to the evidence presented by you in your selection statements.

Selection criteria

APNA Nurse of the Year

A nurse and APNA member who has excelled in one or more of the following areas over the past 12 months:

  • Demonstrating leadership and excellence in the field of primary health care nursing
  • Inspiring other nurses and primary health care professionals.
  • Providing a voice and advocating on behalf of nurses.
  • Providing a voice and advocating on behalf of their local community.
  • Contributing to improve outcomes for patients and/or communities.
  • Contributing to their field, i.e. giving back to primary health care for the benefit of others.

APNA Recently Graduated Nurse of the Year

A recently graduated nurse and APNA member who has recently entered primary health care (a maximum of three years since registration commencement) and who has excelled in one or more of the following areas over the past 12 months:

  • Demonstrating leadership and excellence in the field of primary health care nursing.
  • Inspiring other nurses and primary health care professionals.
  • Providing a voice and advocating on behalf of nurses.
  • Providing a voice and advocating on behalf of their local community.
  • Contributing to improve outcomes for patients and/or communities.

Selection process and key dates

Eligible nominations will be assessed by a selection panel giving due consideration to the above selection criteria.

  • Applications open 14 September 2018
  • Applications close 2 November 2018
  • Winners notified 14 January 2019
  • Awards presented 5 April 2019 at APNA National Conference
