Current Hepatitis C Treatments Available to Patients

August 22, 2018

Since March 2016, a number of direct acting antiviral medications for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C have been made available by the Australian Government through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

These medications have proven to be highly effective, curing over 95% of those that have been treat and are easily self-administered with no adverse side effects.

In the two years since, having general practitioners able to directly provide hepatitis C treatments to their patients, it is estimated that nearly a quarter of the approximate 48,000 Queenslanders affected by the infection in 2016 have been treated.

The Queensland Government is encouraging practices to undertake reviews of patient records to identify those who are living with hepatitis C and recall them for assessment and treatment.

Within the Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN, patients can be treated in conjunction with Kobi House (Darling Downs) or Ipswich Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Service (West Moreton). Both provide hepatitis C treatment services focused on supporting hepatitis C treatment in the GP surgery.

General practitioners can make referrals to these services through the normal referral portal or by contacting Peta Deppeler (Darling Downs) on 4614 6950 or Ruth Casey (West Moreton) on 3817 2428.
