Pilot Health Forum for Women from a Refugee Background

February 28, 2018

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN in collaboration with Breastscreen Toowoomba, MDA settlement service, TRAMS settlement service, and Darling Heights Primary School coordinated a pilot health forum for women from a refugee background, held Friday 23rd February 2018.

This was a collaborative project with health services and settlement services in Toowoomba aimed at addressing health literacy for some our vulnerable community members, especially women from a refugee background.

Many of the women had not experienced previous exposure to cancer screening programs before their arrival in Australia, so the focus of the event was on Breast screening, cervical screening, bowel screening, immunisations and why we go to the GP.

The project allowed health services to share best practice and influence a shift towards integrated community-care. It also provided an opportunity to engage with many women from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The project additionally provided a ‘one-stop-shop’ for women to learn about preventative health services and receive health education in a safe and comfortable environment.

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN would like to thank our guest speakers for the event - Dr Elizabeth Flynn, Dr Sian Edwards, Alexandra Robbins-Hill and Claire Condon.
