2019 National NAIDOC Week: Voice, Treaty ,Truth
July 04, 2019
Lets work together for a shared future.
The theme for NAIDOC week 2019 is Voice. Treaty. Truth. These three key elements were the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
These reforms represent the unified position of First Nations Australians. The 2019 theme acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy. The theme aims to highlight the various First Nations’ desires for lasting and effective agreements such as Treaties- which cannot be achieved unless we have a shared, truthful understanding of the nature of the dispute, of the history, of how we got to where we stand.
Then we can move forward as a nation together.
About NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC is an important week to celebrate the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It is a week that is celebrated by not only indigenous communities, but all Australians from their different walks of life.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
Predominately, NAIDOC Week is held in the first week of July (from Sunday to Sunday). NAIDOC Week 2019 is being held from Sunday, 7th July to Sunday, 14th July.
