Improving alcohol and other drugs support in rural communities

February 25, 2021

Lives Lived Well works across the Darling Downs region to provide services for people seeking support for their own or another’s alcohol and other drug use. Through recent funding from the PHN, Lives Lived Well has been able to expand its current supports to include a service in Goondiwindi.

Previously, support for people in Goondiwindi and surrounds was provided by an outreach service

The additional funding has enabled Lives Lived Well to engage a full time alcohol and other drugs counsellor case manager to be based in Goondiwindi to provide face-to-face as well as telephone and online counselling.

Lives Lived Well’s Manager (Clinical Services) South West Queensland Lindsay McMahon said the new service provided a greater opportunity for the organisation to support the community of Goondiwindi.

“Through the outreach service we started to build a significant base of people to support in the Goondiwindi region,” Lindsay said.

“With our new office opening in the town, we can provide full time support from a local counsellor.

"This builds stronger relationships and enables us to be more open and flexible with how we work with people.”

Lives Lived Well provides a range of community supports across Queensland and NSW, including counselling, withdrawal support, day and group programs, live-in recovery, mental health and culturally appropriate support.

The PHN funds Lives Lived Well to provide services for people seeking alcohol and other drugs support in the Toowoomba, Chinchilla, Dalby, Kingaroy, Warwick, Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi communities, with outreach to surrounding areas.

The new service is located at 84 Marshall Street, Goondiwindi. Referrals can be made by GPs or people can self-refer through the website.
