MEDIA RELEASE: Second respiratory clinic opens in Toowoomba
May 26, 2020
A second GP-led respiratory clinic to test patients for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses is now open in Toowoomba.
The James Neil Medical GP-led Respiratory Clinic is available to clinically assess people with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms (a fever, cough, shortness of breath, a sore throat and/or unusual fatigue).
Respiratory clinics are being established as a part of the Australian Government Department of Health’s response to COVID-19 and Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN has been supporting this process locally in the Darling Downs and West Moreton region.
PHN CEO Merrilyn Strohfeldt said the clinics were available to anyone in the community who had symptoms suggestive of COVID-19.
“We are really pleased to see a second respiratory clinic open in Toowoomba to enable access to testing for anyone in the community who has any symptoms suggestive of COVID-19,” Ms Strohfeldt said.
“Queensland is doing really well with minimizing the spread of the coronavirus, and one of the reasons this has been possible is that we have been able to detect new cases of the virus early and do contract tracing to minimise the spread of the virus.
“We are urging anyone in the community who has symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 to come forward and get tested.”
Federal Member for Groom, The Hon Dr John McVeigh, welcomed the announcement of the second GP-led respiratory clinic in Toowoomba.
“This second clinic will help to further ease pressure off local hospital emergency departments and other GP clinics within the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Residents on the Darling Downs, and our wonderful health professionals, have done an outstanding job of containing the virus so far, but we must remain vigilant.”
“Further progress will be based on our ability to test, trace and respond and this is where the importance of these new respiratory clinics in our community shines through.”
