Paediatric placement program for GPs

October 24, 2019

Our PHN has been working with West Moreton Health to provide paid clinical placements for GPs within the Paediatric Behaviour and Development Medical Team at Ipswich Hospital.

Dr Tanusha Ramaloo (who is also the PHN’s GPLO) and Dr Rida Khalafzai recently completed their 12-week placement which focuses on building GP confidence when managing children with behaviour disorders and utilising effective intervention techniques to stimulate development.

“The clinics were very informative, I have learnt how to improve my approach with patients who have behavioural conditions. This was something I wasn’t very comfortable with before,” sDr Rida Khalafzai said

“It has been amazing to see the in-depth management process, along with the amount of resources available through school and community groups, also, the pharmacological management side as well. I am already applying some of these in my practice and hope to be able to do more in the coming weeks and months.”

GPs are provided with a pack of resources and information to assist with planning and implementation of what they have learnt for their everyday practice.

“This placement has changed how I approach behavioural paediatric medicine. In the clinics I have observed the impact of early and appropriate intervention on these children and am hoping to do the same for the community that I work in,” said Dr Tanusha Ramaloo said.

“This has been a fantastic opportunity to learn strategies to deal with these conditions which we are seeing more of in West Moreton. We didn’t spend a lot of time on this during our medical training, so it was good to come away from this placement with a deeper understanding.”

Positions are still available for GPs operating in the West Moreton region, with plans to extend the Paediatrician Clinical Placement Program to GPs working in the Darling Downs region in the future.

CPD points are available to those who complete the program.
