New palliMEDS and caring@home App

May 02, 2019

The palliMEDS app, developed by NPS MedicineWise for caring@home, familiarises primary care prescribers with eight palliative care medicines that have been endorsed by the Australian & New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine (ANZSPM) for management of common terminal symptoms.

The ANZSPM-endorsed medicines can be used to manage common emergent symptoms in home-based palliative care patients in the last few weeks of life.

GPs and nurse practitioners can integrate the easy-to-use palliMEDS app as a tool to proactively prescribe appropriate end-of-life medications.

caring@home Project Director, Prof Liz Reymond says that because GPs’ scope of practise is so broad, they may only look after a small number of dying patients in the community a year.

“The palliMEDS app allows them ‘fingertip’ reminders about what the best medications are for the various symptoms that palliative care patients often experience at end of life.”

caring@home is contributing to the provision of quality palliative care for the increasing number of Australians who wish to be cared for, and to die at home if possible. The project has developed a suite of best-practice resources to support organisations and healthcare professionals to teach carers to help manage breakthrough symptoms safely using subcutaneous medicines for community-based patients.
