TOMNET continues support for older men in the region

July 31, 2023

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN provides funding to The Older Mens Network (TOMNET) to make a difference in the lives of older men as they navigate retirement.

The PHN enables TOMNET to improve accessibility across the Darling Downs through providing access to essential support services across the Darling Downs region by organising weekly social gatherings, mentoring, and volunteering opportunities.

As part of Men's Health Week 2023 in the Darling Downs, TOMNET invited Ruth Logan from the It's a Bloke Thing Foundation to speak to members at their monthly meeting.

The theme for Men's Health Week 2023 was Healthy Habits and The Older Men’s Network invited Ruth to Toowoomba to spread the message of detecting prostate cancer as early as possible, and how staying healthy helps to lower the risk of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

Ruth provided current statistics on prostate cancer, the various techniques used to check the health of your prostate, and how we can take action if symptoms appear. Ruth presented the meeting in a serious but light-hearted way and TOMNET members were thoroughly engaged.

One member commented, "the clarity of Ruth Logan's topic was such that the silence in the room by the TOMNET members was deafening."

“The Older Mens Network provides opportunities for men 50+ to improve their health and well-being by supporting men prior to retirement and post-retirement, as they continue to live their life with meaning, purpose, and a sense of achievement,” said TOMNET General Manager, Shannon Wade.

“Our Retired Bloke's Program helps men navigate the ups and downs of retirement and our referral program supports men doing it tough by providing pathways for men to access services relevant to them,” said Ms Wade.
