Activity 7 – Response to Per and Poly-Fluroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Exposure

a) Specialised mental health and counselling services

This activity will provide specialised mental health and counselling services to non-defence clientele adversely affected by PFAS exposure.

People identified as being adversely impacted by PFAS exposure may receive this service through referral from GPs, other health providers or self. In order to be eligible, clients must be clearly identified through a PFAS mental health psychological and mental health services claim form which is submitted to Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN by the attending psychologist.

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN provides a psychologist to deliver specialised mental health and counselling services for Oakey, Kingsthorpe and Toowoomba, with a further five mental health providers available as care requirements increase.

b) Building community resilience and confidence 

In collaboration with DHS Community Liaison Officer, service providers and community organisations, this activity provides support for the local community to build resilience and coping mechanisms for dealing with a significant adverse event such as PFAS exposure.

Partnership activities work towards building resilience of the community, families and individuals and are based on needs expressed by impacted community members.

Activities include:

  • Supporting the Oakey Community Wellness Committee
  • Development and generation of a health and wellbeing services
  • Community Cuppa incorporating workshops for mindfulness
  • Overall wellness and health and wellbeing.
