About

Cultural Awareness is an essential skill in providing effective health care. This training will increase your understanding of how a person’s values, beliefs, behavior and basic points of view may differ from one’s own cultural background.

Our Speaker

Sarah Kanai is a Bundjalung woman from Northern region of NSW.  Sarah has 20 years’ working experience in urban, rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout Australia in service delivery and health promotion and prevention. Sarah currently works for The Healing Foundation as the Deputy Director of Programs working in Trauma and Healing. In her role Sarah’s manages, coordinates and support program strategic and operational development and delivery of trauma and healing strategies to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and agencies across the country. 

Learning Outcomes

This workshop aims to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people enhancing the cultural awareness of GP’s, general practice staff, primary health care staff and other health care providers.

  • Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
  • Explore how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions and behaviours in a clinical setting
  • Develop skills in cultural awareness to effectively communicate with indigenous patients
  • Develop effective strategies to manage Cultural Responsiveness within the practice
