Supporting Deaf Individuals with Complex needs in Mental Health
The Deafness and Mental Health Statewide Consultation and Liaison Service assists mental health
professionals throughout Queensland with Deaf cultural and linguistic support, advice and tools to enable
Deaf and hard of hearing people to access appropriate, accessible and equitable mental health care. We
have several online training modules focusing on Deafness and Mental Health:
1. Working with Deafness – Introduction to Deafness - explains the barriers and challenges of
accessing mental health services for Deaf people – approx. 30mins. This course is aimed at mental
health professionals including psychiatrists, psychiatry registrars, psychologists, occupational
therapists, nurses and peer workers.
2. Working with Deafness – Level 2 – explains different perspectives on deafness and provides a
deeper understanding for those working with Deaf and hard of hearing people across Queensland –
approx. 30mins. This course is aimed at mental health professionals including psychiatrists,
psychiatry registrars, psychologists, occupational therapists, nurses and peer workers.
3. Introduction to Deafness for Administration Officers – explains the importance of being deaf
aware, aimed at upskilling and improving knowledge of deafness for administration officers who
are pivotal in making services deaf friendly – approx. 30mins.
