Be Winter Strong

May 12, 2026

In winter, respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19, RSV and pneumococcal disease are serious and highly contagious.

Vaccination is the best way to protect you and your loved ones this winter. In Queensland, anyone can get a free flu vaccine until 30 September 2026. Children aged 2 to 5 years may also be eligible for a safe, needle-free nasal spray option, FluMist.

Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection especially serious for young children and older people. Vaccinations are recommended routinely for infants and children, adults aged 70 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over, and those with risk conditions for pneumococcal disease.

It is also important to stay up to date with COVID-19 booster doses. COVID-19 can cause severe illness particularly in older adults, including aged care residents, and in people with medical risk conditions. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe disease and death from COVID-19.

Little habits can also make a big difference. Keep your family winter strong by regularly washing your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. If you are feeling unwell, and need to leave the house, remember to wear a mask.

Knowing where to go for care over the winter months can help you get treated sooner and reduce pressure on busy emergency departments. For urgent, but not lifethreatening conditions, Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs) provide free care, with extended hours, 7 days a week.
