Medicare UCCs a trusted resource for urgent care

April 30, 2026

Across the region, the PHN commissions three Medicare Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs) - Ipswich, Goodna, and Toowoomba - to provide walk-in, bulk-billed care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

Since opening, one-third of patients indicated they would have otherwise presented to an emergency department – highlighting the crucial role Medicare UCCs play in easing pressure on hospitals.

One community member shared their experience visiting a Medicare UCC late last year:

“We had to take our daughter to be treated for a fractured and dislocated toe. She has an extreme aversion to hospitals and medical experiences in general, but the team on call were so wonderful and supportive. Everything was quick and smooth, and there was no need for a trip to the emergency department.”

Their experience was echoed by others, with another patient sharing:

“Had it not been for the correct and timely diagnosis made at Goodna Medicare UCC, the consequences could have been serious injury or worse. We felt genuinely heard, culturally supported, and treated with respect throughout our entire interaction. This level of culturally safe care is vital and should be recognised.

“The entire team demonstrated outstanding communication skills, the ability to de-escalate distress, and genuine compassion. They know how to speak to people, how to listen, and how to act when it matters most. I strongly believe this clinic deserves formal recognition.”

Choosing well-established practices with a strong understanding of and experience in providing for the health needs in the local area was a key part in the PHN’s Medicare UCC commissioning process.

Goodna, and the surrounding suburbs of Redbank, Collingwood Park, Bellbird Park, and Gailes, is home to a growing, culturally diverse community, with strong Māori, Pasifika, African and Asian (particularly Vietnamese and Filipino) communities.

The most recent Census data indicates that around 33% of residents were born overseas, with recent settlement trends including Rohingya and Congolese communities.

“Building trust through respectful, culturally responsive care that supports everyone in our community is critical,” said Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN CEO, Lucille Chalmers.

“It’s been fantastic to hear these stories from our local community sharing their experiences of high-quality care in the region,” said Ms Chalmers.

Since opening their doors, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Goodna Medicare UCCs have delivered more than 72,000 episodes of care combined, with a recent average of 45 and 52 presentations per day.
