PHN backs nurse immunisation training

April 30, 2025

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN has been supporting RACH practice nurses and registered nurses with funding to complete an immunisation course which allows them to be nurse immunisers.

The Cunningham Centre Immunisation Course equips nurses with the knowledge and skills to safely administer vaccines as an authorised immunisation provider.

The PHN had a strong uptake for the course in 2024, with 49 individuals successfully completing the course from 52 enrolments.

This course is accredited by Health Education Services Australia (HESA) and covers four learning areas:

  • immunisation and public health
  • legislative and professional practice
  • immunisation and the immune system
  • application of vaccination processes.

To enrol and be part of the 2025 cohort which will run from July to December, please contact our team at practicesupport@ddwmphn.com.au.

Testimonials

Hannah from Southern Cross Care Taroom: Really worthwhile and informative Course. Definitely recommend continuing to provide. I work in Rural and Remote and am able to use these skills to deliver immunisations to our elderly residents in the community and RAC homes.

Komal: I would like to thank you for this funded course opportunity. Immunisation is essential for prevention the spread of infection and disease in community and protect the community health and wellbeing, by doing this course, gave the necessary skill and knowledge that we (nurse) can utilise to educate community and deliver safe vaccinations.

Course was very informative and gained good knowledge about immunisation. From this course, I have learned about immune system and how vaccine work in our body, national immunisation program, pre-vaccination screening, how to prepare and administer vaccines. This course also gave knowledge to recognise and respond to adverse reactions following immunisation, vaccine management and cold chain breach. I did enjoy studying this course.

As a practice nurse, I have to do childhood immunisation, influenza and covid immunisation and also adult immunisation. By doing this course, I can utilise my knowledge and skills at workplace, provide immunisation information to patients and also to assist with planning catch-up vaccination.

Carole: Personally, I enjoyed the immunisation course and learnt a lot. It was great to put into practice the theory when we had a Cold Chain Breach due to the Clinic's refrigerator & UPS malfunctioning (although I would have preferred NOT to have had everything stop working!) As to how I will be utilising my skills within the clinic - it will primarily be in relation to education of the patients.
