Dialectical behaviour therapy in practice: A clinician's guide

This webinar will give an overview of the dialectical behaviour therapy is part of the University of Sydney’s Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use Comorbidity Project webinar series, which is focused on applying evidence into practice.

This webinar will be presented by Dr Natalie Mastrogiovanni. Natalie is research psychologist at The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use.

Dr Natalie Mastrogiovanni is a research psychologist at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use, delivering an integrated PTSD and substance-use therapy (COPE-A) to participants aged 12-25yo as part of a clinical trial. Natalie also works as a psychologist in community mental health seeing adults with complex mental health needs. She completed the combined Master of Clinical Psychology and PhD at the University of New South Wales. Natalie’s PhD thesis focused on mental health stigma and help-seeking amongst Arabic-speaking refugees. Natalie adapted and delivered an online, stigma-reduction intervention to Arabic-speaking refugees with PTSD symptoms and stigmatizing beliefs with the aim of increasing access to mental health services. Aside from research, Natalie is a clinical psychology registrar and has primarily worked in various roles within NSW health. Natalie generally works with clients who have complex trauma backgrounds, personality vulnerabilities, emotional dysregulation and substance use. Natalie tailors evidence-based treatments to suit clients’ needs, primarily working with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, trauma-focussed CBT and schema-informed approaches.

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the key components of the DBT model
  • Outline DBT skills and determine when they are best applied
  • Understand how DBT skills and concepts can be incorporated into AOD clinical practice
