Restrictive Practices and Chemical Restraint in People with Intellectual Disability: A GP Framework for Safe Prescribing

General practitioners play a key role in prescribing and reviewing psychotropic medications for people with intellectual disability, often within complex clinical, ethical and regulatory frameworks. Inappropriate psychotropic prescribing can contribute to significant health risks, while restrictive practices are subject to specific legislative and reporting requirements.

This activity will equip GPs with practical skills to identify restrictive practices, assess the appropriateness of psychotropic prescribing and navigate NDIS legislative requirements. Through case-based learning and discussion of real-world clinical scenarios, participants will strengthen their knowledge of safe prescribing, documentation and collaboration with Positive Behaviour Support Providers.
